BUYING/SELLING A HORSE

Buying A Horse

Commission -  10% of the selling price, minimum of $500
            Includes:
Locating the horse and/or speaking with the owner and trainer
Analyzing videos of horse (does not include postage to return video)
Traveling to horses (The buyer responsible for hotel fees, meals, and a day fee.  A full day is $200 and a half of a day is $100.) The day fee will be paid after the trip and will be subtracted from the final commission.
Evaluation of horse
Negotiating the price
Setting up the veterinarian examination
Evaluation of horse and rider combination
Contracting a Bill of Sale, if necessary

The Commission doesn’t include:
Cost of shipping horse to On Course Riding Academy
Board during trial period, if seller allows a trial
                        Lessons during the trial period
Professional training during the trial period
Cost of shipping from On Course Riding Academy, if trial or vetting is unsatisfactory
Assisting veterinarian with the entire examination

My evaluation does not guarantee the soundness or health of the horse.  It is strongly recommended to have a thorough veterinarian examination performed.   It is also suggested that the buyer be present during the examination.  The examinations may take up to three hours.  If the potential buyer is not present and Katie Moriarty or Patty Bennett Keeler assist the veterinarian during the examination, then additional fees may apply.

On Course Riding Academy receives a commission when a horse is purchased.

Trial Period- On some occasions, the seller will allow the potential buyer to take the horse on trial.  Some sellers require insurance for the trial.  During this period of time, the potential buyer will pay for the horse to be shipped to On Course Riding Academy and will pay for the board, lessons, training and veterinarian examination.  It is an added expense, but it allows the buyer to really see what they are buying.  The time period can range from 1 day to a week

There is a risk about taking a horse on trial.  The potential buyer must return the horse in the same condition that it was taken.  During this period, any jumping or heavy exercise of the horse must be done during a lesson or under Katie’s supervision.  The required insurance binder will only cover mortality and possibly major medical, it does not cover a lameness that occurred during the trial period.  If the potential buyer takes a horse on trial and the horse goes lame, then the horse would need to stay boarded at On Course until the horse returned to his original state.

Selling A Horse at On Course

All horses being sold from On Course must be represented by an On Course Trainer, Katie Moriarty or Patty Bennett.

Trainer Commission -  10% of the selling price, minimum of $500  paid to the trainer that is representing your horse

Facility Commission- 5% of the selling price, minimum of $250

            Includes:
Making videos and advertisements (seller is responsible for advertising fees)
Free listing of your horse on www.oncourseriding.com
                        Contacting professional contacts
Receiving calls from potential buyers
Sending a copy of the “sale video” to potential buyers
Arranging appointment for potential buyers to try the horse
Showing horse to potential buyers
Negotiating the price, if necessary
Contracting a Bill of Sale

The Commission doesn’t include:
Cleaning horse up for potential buyer (pull mane, clip muzzle)
                        Cost of shipping
                        Board during selling period
                        Training during selling period
                        Entry Fees during selling period
                        Braiding for show, if necessary

On Course only receives a commission when the horse is sold.

After you have decided to sell your horse, you also must consider if you would let your horse go out on trial.
Most buyers will ask and some won’t buy a horse without one.
Due to a conflict of interest, the veterinarians used for the pre-purchase examination must be different than your current veterinarian.  The examination is completely paid for by the potential buyer.
